

MICHALIS KONTOS
Michalis Kontos is Associate Professor in Breast and General Surgery of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). He is the Vice President of the Hellenic Association of Breast Surgeons (HABS) and he has been continuously elected as Member of the Executive Board for several years. He is also Member of EORTC (European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer), the Official Representative of HABS to BIG (Breast International Group), panelist in the Oncoplastic Breast Cancer Consortium (Basel, Switzerland) and the National Representative of Greece and Member of the Scientific Committee of EUBREAST (European Breast Cancer Research Association of Surgical Trialists). He has been honored with an award from the Hellenic Association of Women with Breast Cancer “Alma Zois” for his work against Breast Cancer and he is the National Coordinator of two international prospective multicentre trials focusing on the optimization of surgical treatment of women with Breast Cancer. Furthermore, he organizes the annual “Hands-on Seminar on Breast and Oncoplastic Surgery” in Athens for the training of junior Breast Surgeons in basic and advanced surgical techniques.
He graduated from the Medical School of NKUA and he obtained his Ph.D. in 2005. He finished his training in General Surgery and specialized in the diagnosis and management of breast diseases at Guy’s Hospital in London. He is a member of the Editorial Board of international journals, of several Greek and International scientific associations and organizations with a focus on Surgery and Breast Cancer. He has considerable organizing experience as a member or chairman of Organizing and Scientific Committees in Medical Conferences and has been the lead researcher in several clinical and preclinical research projects. He is the author of more than 100 articles in established international medical journals with more than 1000 citations and h-index 19. He has also written, contributed or edited chapters or whole books on Breast Cancer. He has a special interest in the results of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on breast surgery and axillary staging, targeted axillary dissection, oncoplastic surgery and relevant medical technology, surgery in oligometastatic disease and surgical training.
